(2 reviews)Editorial Review: Prilosec OTC is different from other over-the-counter heartburn medication. The lining of your stomach produces acid through millions of tiny acid pumps. When you eat, these pumps switch on to produce the acid that breaks down food. Prilosec OTC works by directly blocking many active pumps. Your stomach still produces enough acid to digest the food you eat. But by reducing the acid, Prilosec OTC lessens the chance that you will suffer from frequent heartburn. Prilosec OTC directly shuts down many active pumps and each daily dose works up to 24 hours. Use as directed as part of a 14-day course of therapy.

Better for the buck, 2008-09-30If you are taking that "little purple pill" for stomach pain, acid reflux or peptic ulcer disease, this pill is not purple but it is the same. Some people are afraid of generic medications as they feel they do not work as well. My husband was taking Nexium which was costing $35 copay per month, we requested that he be changed to Prilosec OTC or omeprazole which is the generic equivalent. Guess what, he had the same success with the omeprazole as he did with the expensive, brand-name Nexium with no difference. I recommend generic medicines to everyone, it is the easiest way to save money. Do you know the drug companies actually try to ban generic equivalent medicines for up to 5 years after a new one hits the market, because its cheaper. Remember Zantac, then Prilosec, then Nexium. See a pattern. They want us to buy their expensive, name-brand medicines. We don't have to. Try it.

inexpensive alternative, 2008-09-19This generic equivalent of prilosec is made in India, comes in a loose bundle of foil bubble wraps (no box). I have used it for a few months now and it works fine.
