Awesome!, 2006-05-21
I have night-time reflux and most nights I'd wake up choking and gasping for air. Just awful! To say that I dreaded going to bed is an understatement. I ordered the king-size Mattress Genie and haven't choked since!
Just as efficient as a wedge pillow, but without the fear of falling off. If you've ever slept on a wedge, you know the benefits of elevating your head to alleviate symptoms of acid reflux/GERD, sleep apnea, sinus, etc. However, in my experience, the problem with the wedge is that it's too narrow for an "active" sleeper like me. The Mattress Genie completely eliminated my worries of ending up lying flat because it raises the entire head of the mattress, so I can move around freely in my sleep and still be elevated.
The price can't be beat. I would love to have an adjustable bed, but I'm not ready to shell out thousands of dollars for it. The Mattress Genie is the perfect alternative. It installs quickly and easily - Just move the head of your mattress one third of the way down; place the deflated MG on top of the box spring and pull the mattress back up on top of it. Now adjust until you find your "sweet spot." The air pump can even be switched off to avoid accidental inflation/deflation. The hand control remains illuminated as long as it's plugged into an outlet. If this light bothers you while you sleep, just stick the control in your nightstand drawer if you have one, or under your bed.
Since the MG is comprised of only one air chamber, the only flaw that I've found is the motion of the mattress when a second person gets into bed. My husband usually goes to bed later than me, and almost every time I am awakened by the jiggling of the mattress when he gets into bed. It's a small price to pay, though, for a choking-free night's sleep.
Update: I've been using the MG for a little over 6 months now. The jiggling of the mattress I mentioned previously is no longer a problem. A couple of weeks is all it took to get used to it. So, I still give the MG two very enthusiastic thumbs up!

Mattress Genie - a back pain reliever, 2006-01-20
I bought the king size Mattress Genie for my elderly mother who suffers from arthritis in her back. She never slept well due to chronic pain in her back. The Mattress Genie has helped her tremendously! She loves it and sleeps much better because she can raise and lower the head of the bed to any position to alleviate her back pain.
The Mattress Genie is made of heavyweight vinyl that fills with air to raise the head of the bed. To install it, you simply slide it under the head of the mattress between the mattress and box spring, connect the air hose from the Mattress Genie to the small air compressor and plug it into a regular electrical outlet and it's ready to use! Took my husband and me less than five minutes! Very simple to use. Using a corded remote control-type device, you can let air in or out to raise or lower the head of the mattress in any position you like. It takes only a few minutes to raise it completely. When the M.G. is filling up with air to raise the head, the compressor sounds about as loud as a dust-buster type vacuum and does not disturb my mother's neighbors in adjacent apartments as it only runs a few minutes. No sound when deflating/lowering. The air compressor hides under the bed.
I was a little skeptical that the M.G. could raise the head of a heavy, king size mattress but the M.G. does it easily and my mother has a very plush mattress. She loves it also for TV viewing, eating and reading in bed. But the best benefit is that my mother has less pain and sleeps better and is more energetic during the day. I'm sure the M.G. would be beneficial for other medical problems. I highly recommend the Mattress Genie!
